Hi all,
I'm using XP Home, SP3.
When I had a previous Audacity setup, the right click drop-down menu of a music file (such as mp3) had Send To > Audacity and Open With...
- > Audacity.
But now I've uninstalled the old version and have the beta up, it doesn't appear.
I can try Open With... C:Program FilesAudacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode)Audacity.exe but the list doesn't like it. Audacity isn't even added to it, let alone actually attempting to open the file.
Anyone know how I can fix this? Or it just a limitation of the current Beta?
It's annoying having to open Audacity first, then importing the mp3. (The import works fine.)
Thanks,
kjhf

The problem is that by default Audacity tries to open a project file rather than an mp3 file.

And this wasn't the case on older versions? Is there a way to change it?

What I am wondering is is there a command-line option that will tell Audacity to open a file as imported audio.

Could you clarify "doesn't like it" - what exactly happens?

When I select audacity.exe, the Open With... > Browse prompt closes and the choose program list returns to the active window, but the audacity program isn't added to the list.

Due to a Windows limitation, "Open with" won't support more than one executable on the computer having the same name.
To work round the problem, rename the Audacity Beta executable to something other than "audacity.exe" (for example "audacitybeta.exe"). You may also need to update any links to Audacity that you have created.

Yup, that worked, thank you!
How come Windows keeps a record of the uninstalled program directories too? (i.e the older Audacity I uninstalled wasn't on the list, but as you say, was conflicting with Windows.)

I don't often use Windows much these days, but I'd guess that it's keeping the old file association in the Registry.
As you have uninstalled the old version of Audacity I'd guess that it's possible to manually edit the Registry to remove the old association, but editing the Windows Registry can be dangerous unless you know exactly what you are doing as it is far too easy to make your computer unbootable.
