Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Track titles

Post by glynd » Thu Sep 30, 2010 12:20 pm

Hi All,
Real newbie. Version 1.3B on Windows 7
I have a bunch of MP3 files which have the title and track numbers already in. All I need to do is to change the sample rate to 44100 from 22500 and nothing else. I have changed the sample rate and save the file in MP3 format but the title is now blank.
Is there a way to do this so the titles remain after the sample rate has been changed and the file is saved?
TIA
Glyn

Please use the current 1.3.12 if you are not already doing so. We always need to know the exact three-digit version number of Audacity you are using (Help > About Audacity).

If you are multiple importing the MP3s and then multiple exporting (File > Export Multiple) the metadata stored will only be for the last file imported because Audacity can't store metadata per track. To export the correct metadata for each file you would need to import then export each file in turn.

A possible workaround in most cases to automate multiple import/export while retaining metadata "would" be to set up a Chain. That will preserve the metadata tags (as long as they don't contain Unicode characters, due to a bug), but unfortunately chains will set the sample rate to that of the file being processed, so that won't work for you.

If the above isn't the problem you mean, please repeat your tests in 1.3.12 and give step by step instructions to reproduce it (1, 2, 3...) from launch of Audacity.

Thanks

Hi Gale,
Thanks for the quick response.
I feel a little in over my head with this. I am using 1.3.12 - At least that I know!
If I import an MP3 file the title is not shown in metadata (file | edit metadata) but the rest is there. I am sure I saw the title when trying this the first time, but now I can't see it anywhere.
If you could help me a bit more, I would appreciate it. But please type slowly so I can follow what you are writing.
Perhaps you would give me a 1,2 3 process?
TIA
Glyn

Where did you see the Track Title before - in Windows Media Player, Winamp...? File > Exit Audacity and restart it to clear the Audacity Metadata Editor. Right-click over the MP3 in Explorer > Properties and click the "Details" tab. Note what the Title says there. Then drag the file into Audacity and look in Metadata Editor. Is the Track Title blank? If so what does the Title say in Explorer?

What I said earlier is still true. You will unfortunately have to import and export one file at a time to preserve the metadata in the exported files (assuming Audacity imports the tags correctly in the first place).

Hi Gale,

Somehow the one file lost its metadata.
I did with another File.
Looked at details under properties of the file and the metadata was present.
imported the file (audio) into Audacity
under file | open metadata, the title and track number were missing.
under tracks resampled and changed to 44100
export the file to a new location
looked at the details under properties as before, and the title and the track number are missing.

Looks like the metadata is lost when file | import | audio process is followed.

Did I make a mistake?
Should I use version 1.2 instead?

TIA

Hi Gale
I installed 1.2 and that handles the metadata correctly. I think the new interface in 1.3 is an improvement but v 1.2 works fine.
Thanks for your help with this.

Seems that I am wrong - again!
V 1.2 shows the metadata sometimes and other times, it doesn't. I have checked each file I import or open, beforehand to ensure the metadata is present. In all cases that do fail, the track number and the title are missing, but the remainder are ok.
Any ideas?

Please can you attach a small MP3 (up to 1 MB) that has Title and Track Number in Explorer Properties but does not show it when using File > Open Metadata Editor in Audacity. You can attach using the "Upload Attachment" tab underneath the "Preview" and "Post Message" buttons.

Also do you know what application created these MP3s (or their metadata, if different) in the first place?
