Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Thanks - it appears that audacity is opening way off screen, maximizing works as a quick stop gap until I found the cfg deletion technique.

Re: 1.3.4 used to work. won't open. reinstalled-still won't
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone in the forum! I am using Audacity 1.3.5 beta with Windows XP and was having the same issue with the program showing in the taskbar but being unable to maximize it. For some reason I couldn't find the audacity.cfg file in the Audacity folder. I searched for it with Explorer, found it, deleted it and then reopened Audacity. That did the trick!

That's because it isn't in the Audacity folder. It's here:katefurr67 wrote:For some reason I couldn't find the audacity.cfg file in the Audacity folder
Documents and Settings<user name>Application DataAudacityaudacity.cfg
You may also need to turn on "show hidden files"

And that's so that Audacity 1.3.x can maintain a preferences file for each separate user (each user with a separate log in account on the computer) - thus affording greater flexibility.stevethefiddle wrote: That's because it isn't in the Audacity folder. It's here:

Updated for VISTA users.....
Just to update this information for VISTA users, I had this same problem on the newest version 1.3.6 and since I have the VISTA OS, here's a little revision on where to find the audacity.cfg file on VISTA. Opening 'my computer', the top icon is 'desktop'. The next icon bears the name I gave to this machine which for me, is GRAPHICS. Opening this folder (what ever yours is named on your VISTA machine), choose APPDATA>ROAMING>AUDACITY. The audacity.cfg lies in this folder. On my machine, which is set to always show all hidden files, for some reason, did not find this cfg file using the search feature! That was a surprise. It should have found it.
Anyway, the removal of this file solved my problem too. I'm pretty sure it was caused by clicking too fast, too many times, when opening the program to use it.
