Mp3 Export Full of Artifacts

I am crazy about the new version of Audacity -- really raises the bar. One problem I have encountered using the Lame Mp3 Exporter -- the results are so full of digital artifacts akin to pitch change or radical noise removal as to be unusable; sounds like I have re-pitched the whole thing through a 1988 Eventide. Running the .wav exports through a standard freeware converter continues to produce excellent, transparent results.

Which version of Lame are you using and where did you get it from?
What compression settings are you using?
