Another question, is there a difference between versions 1.2 & 1.3 with regard to label tracks? in all the screen shots I've seen 1.2 has one track, all labels in one row. But in what I have done using 1.3 I have 11 tracks. ie label 1
label2
label3 and so on

Thanks, that shows why it is not working correctly.
The problem is that you have multiple label tracks (not sure how you managed to do that). All of the labels need to be in the same label track.

To move all of your labels into the first label track, click on "Tracks menu > Edit Labels"
In the Edit Labels window, click on the entry in the "Track" column and select "Track 1" (see picture below)
Repeat for each label track.
Click OK.

When all of the labels have been moved to label track 1 you may delete the unused label tracks by clicking on the [X] in the top left corner of the track.

Not only do you need to use one label track, but if you are trying to create one file for each of the speech bits (leaving out the background noise between them) you need to use region labels. See the example here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... e#examples

I was curious as to how I got multiple label tracks. I've checked and see that at each point I wanted to insert one, I clicked "Add New" instead of "Add label at selection" Might help to know this perhaps,don't suppose I'm the only idiot!

Rumpy, the quickest way to add a label is to use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+B - which adds a label at the current cursor position (or selected region)

Another useful keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+M which places a marker, which is basically a label, at the current recording or playback position.

I frequently need to insert track breaks into a large mp3 file and save the track breaks as mp3 files. For example a downloaded Audiobook from Librivox's library of books in the public domain may be an hour long. I want to break the file into tracks to 5 to 8 minutes long. Does Audacity do this sound editing function? Also can Audacity create CD or DVD disc labels?

What you want to do is similar to breaking an LP recording into its separate tracks. That is covered here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... ate_tracks

Audacity does not print labels.
