waveform just a line
I have just downloaded Audacity; tried to record some music from a portable cassette player via USB straight into the laptop. When record button is pressed and the player playing, the waveform is just a line with very few dots. Ive checked the preferences for Tracks and Default View Mode is Waveform. Can someone direct me what to do so that the waveform is clearly formed? Thanks

Pieces missing there. You found a portable cassette player that has a USB connection?
You need to identify the USB service in Windows Control Panels and select it for recording.
Windows Control Panel

Then you need to make sure that Audacity Preferences is set to the same thing and restart Audacity.
Still dead? If you select Effect > Amplify > OK on the existing track, does the music appear, but low and distorted?
