Recording Help?

Alright here's the deal:

for a while now, i've been recording from my keyboard(piano) to Audacity using an AUX 3.5mm cable and everything has been working fine until a couple of days ago.

it used to always record both Left and Right channels but now it only records on the right, and this problem has made everything i record from the AUX have quite a bit of distortion.

this happened all of a sudden, iw as recording a track and when i clicked to record a new track, the problem started...

I have tried uninstalling then reinstalling, i have tried making sure in Preferences that it should record in Stereo and i have even tried buying a new AUX cable but it doesn't seem to want me to record in both channels! :@

Please help me!

A fault (or dirt in) the line-in port on the computer? Try switching off the computer, cleaning the port with some alcohol on a rag and rebooting.

In case it's a fault with the keyboard output, do you have another port you can connect from on it (headphones out instead of line-out)? You can turn on Transport > Software Playthrough to hear what you are recording in Audacity (with a little delay).

If you have eliminated the keyboard output as the reason then the problem is the input port or the sound device itself, or its drivers.

You should always make sure your sound device has the latest drivers specific to your particular computer model and operating system, as supplied by the device or motherboard manufacturer. See these tips for checking and obtaining the most appropriate drivers. Shut down and restart the computer, even if you already have the latest manufacturers' drivers.

If the problem is still there, get an external sound card, assuming you are currently using the line-in of the computer sound device. You can get a reasonable USB sound card for about $30 like Trust that will probably be a slight improvement over the motherboard sound.

Alright i've found that the problem is in fact coming from my laptop.

Ever since my speakers started giving a sort of 'static' noise from them all the time, it has been recording from only one side and giving the recording a lot of static within the song as well.

i muted the "external mic" in the audio panel and the static sound is now gone but it is STILL recording on one side.... i know this isnt your field of expertise but i was hoping if anybody at all could help me with this....

It's a hardware problem. With the limited space that you usually have inside a laptop (and the difficulty of/restrictions on opening the case) it probably isn't worth trying to fix. New USB sound card = $30, time and labour to get someone to try and fix the input probably two or three times that amount.

Obviously I assume you checked in the Windows Control Panel if there is a balance control on the input.
