Distortion from USB input

Post by plodder627 » Thu Sep 09, 2010 11:34 pm

Attempting to transfer vinyl to disk. USB input from record player delivers distortion even when mic setting is on 1 - next is zero which means there is no input signal. Is there any way to reduce the input signal via a different way to prevent distortion when recording? The input level slider doesn't work on my beta version with windows 7.

Some turntables have a volume control on the under side of the turntable (really inconvenient). Have a look if your turntable does, and if so, turn it down a bit.

Steve, No volume control under the turntable. I tried to use the "line-in" option on the computer rather than the USB as the turntable also has stereo RCA outputs but I can't get my computer to recognise the line in option (comes up under control panel - sounds - recording - as "currently unavailable") and despite trying to enable it refuses to recognize it. I know this is becoming more of a computer / windows 7 problem rather than an audacity software issue but I've tried to google a solution but all the sites visited simply say to enable the line in option and it should work - USB connection on the turntable continues to deliver a distorted sound (I'm using a new needle and records are in good condition.) Input Volume control on audacity now works but even at the lowest setting of 1 I still get distortion.

I suspect that this is going to turn out to be a Windows 7 problem.

Do you have the latest Beta 1.3.12 installed?

When you are trying with the RCA leads to your on-board soundcard, do you have the USB disconnected? You should do.
