Splitting track

It's my first day of using audacity, so please pardon if the question sounds too basic. I have converted a you tube video into Mp3 format. Now I am trying to make karaoke version of the song, I imported the song to audacity but it isn't giving me the option to split the track.. Any idea why this happens?

Does the mp3 show as 2 tracks when opened in Audacity?

Are you trying to split using the inverted triangle next to 1.0 on the waveform scale?

If it shows as only 1 track, can you add a new track from the tracks menu?

The mp3 Track showed as just one track, after importing from file menu, tried the tracks menu(add new) , i copied and pasted the track i wanted onto the new track, i then changed the top track to left and bottom one to right channel, I selected the bottom track and inverted using the effects menu and then changed both the tracks back to mono.. but havent been able to make it into a karaoke version.. any idea what i am doing wrong????

Update: i think the issue was with my track being a mono track, so i converted it to stereo track in audacity(selecting file and the using the edit menu duplicated it and the changed to stero file)
I tried to remove vocal from this stereo track, still it didnt work..
Isnt it possible to remove vocals if the MP3 was originally recorded in mono and then coverted to stereo

I think you probably answered the question.

If you have a single mono track containing someone's voice, I wouldn't expect you could do a lot about removing that vocal, no matter how many tracks you made out of it, inverting, etc. You can try using an equalizer or filters of one kind or another, but I wouldn't expect much.
