"Unhandled Exception" message keeps occurring

Every time I press "Play" now, I keep getting "Unhandled Exception" messages ("An unhandled exception has occurred"), followed by a choice to shut down the program.

This has happened about six times in a row now; I haven't been able to get it to work.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening, and how to fix it?

Audacity 1.3.12 beta, Windows 7, and yes, it's been working fine (more or less) since I downloaded it a week or two ago, until this problem started happening today.

Actually, I tried opening several files: none of them opened, but this was the only one that gave me this particular message.

There are many tracks in this particular recording, probably more than twenty.

Do you think that might be part of the problem? Like maybe I should bounce some of them together? (I would gladly do this, if only the program didn't crash at the first touch of a button!)

I will say this: another problem I was having (where the playback kept getting all "jerky" and computery-sounding) was helped by using the "mix and render" feature to combine three tracks together.

What's the show? Where did the sound files come from? If Audacity will not open most of your clips, then they are in a format that Audacity doesn't recognize or can't manage. The oddball one is unrecognized and damaged causing Audacity to collapse coughing up blood.

I bet all the clips from my web site play just fine -- divorced from the original show.

You should convert everything to one known, good, working format outside of Audacity before you try to do serious editing. Audacity isn't a very good converter.


You can get into serious trouble with any program that dynamically needs large amounts of high quality drive space by not providing it. Audacity will not run into a highly fragmented disk drive and no program will run right on a drive that's filling up.

This is where you tell us you defrag and error check your drive regularly and there's over 20% free space.

What do you mean? If I convert it all to one format, don't I lose the ability to edit individual tracks?

I'm using a new laptop, with a large hard drive--I believe there's plenty of empty space, but I will double-check it.

When playback starts to get "all jerky" it means that your system is getting close to the limits of how many tracks it can handle - the entire system is likely to become a bit unstable when this happens as the computer may not be able to accomplish necessary tasks in the right order or complete them in the available time. Mixing down some of the tracks so that you have less tracks should make things better. (You may also want to Export the individual tracks before you mix them down in case you need them again in the unmixed form.)
