How can this latency problem be corrected?

I'm trying to record some vocals over music, and as I'm singing, on the headphones I hear myself singing half a second later than I actually sing. This is distracting, and it's messing with my timing; plus I have to manually move the lagging vocal track after it's recorded, to get it into the right place.

Is there a way to eliminate this latency? Some setting maybe, that I can adjust so that this doesn't happen?

(If this has already been dealt with elsewhere, please point me there. Thanks for your help.)

Playback latency is expected if you are using software playthrough. Try using hardware playthrough instead as described in this Frequently Asked Question. Otherwise you'll need some kind of external recording interface that offers hardware monitoring.

Recording latency is also expected. It can be adjusted for at "Latency correction" at Edit > Preferences: Recording, and thus eliminated if the latency is constant. See Latency Test in the Manual for how to measure the latency.
