Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Records LPs & 45s but only left track of tapes

Post by kelbaugh » Wed Apr 02, 2008 2:34 am

I am using Audacity 1.2.6 with Windows XP. My turntable is an Ion TTUSB.

I have scuuessfully recorded my LPs and 45s. They are stored on my hard drive and I have made CDs from them with no problem. BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT TRACKS RECORDED FROM ALL RECORDS THEN TO THE CDs.

My tape deck's output is connected to my stereo receiver. I connected my receiver's headset jack (1/4" with an 1/8" adapter) to the 1/8" input jack on my Ion turntable. ONLY THE LEFT TRACK RECORDS AND PLAYS BACK. The visual indicator (both the waveform portion and the VU indicators) indicate that only the LEFT track is recording.

I have both tracks (L & R) coming out of my receiver when I use a headset.

I have both tracks on my hard drive after recording a record from my TTUSB turntable.

The cord (RCA cable) has tip, ring, and sleeve continuity.
PLEASE HELP. I HAVE A LIFETIME OF MUSIC ON TAPE THAT I WANT TO RECORD TO CD & MP3. THANK YOU.

If you plug headphones into your tape deck do you get both a left and right channel?

If so then it is likely thay the cabling is suspect somewhere - either your link tapedeck to ION or the internal wiring in the ION itself from the 1/8" input socket to the internal soundcard in the ION.

A good clean of the TRS plugs would be a good start - use some paper tissue/kitchen towel wet with a little neat alcohol (vodka is good for this) - wipe with this and then wipe dry with fresh tissue. Do not touch the TRS plugs with your fingers - the natural oils etc. can cause connectivity problems. Also if you can find/build a cable without an adapter that would probably be much better too.
