new computer won't record

I have a new computer that uses windows 7 and I am at a loss on how to get it to record audio. I have tried both audacity (the newest version) and the audio record program that came with the laptop. I set it off under warrenty and they replaced the motherboard (although now I am not sure why they replaced it because it is still doing the same thing). I have tried going into the preferences and various settings within that, I have found disabled sound hardware and enabled it. I have pluged the mic jack into a mp3 player and a tape player and it sounded just as bad as when I plugged it into the headphone jack on the laptop. The sound from the built in mic might be better but it is difficult since that is not the best way to record music.

Running from my phone headset to the microphone jack on the laptop, the sound coming out of the speakers sounds great but when I listen to the recording made at the same time it is very distorted. It might sound ok at times but other times it is so distorted it is unrecognizable and this variation happens throughout the song. I am not sure what to try next. I was reading somewhere that the drivers may be set in a way to prevent the recording so it limits plagerism - but I don't remember where I read that and to be honest, editing the driver makes me a bit nervous - although I suppose if I make a restore point just before that, it shouldn't mess anything up too badly. But I lost the webpage with the directions.

It does ok with voice only, I can even record voice only on the phone and then record that with audacity and get a reasonable playback.

Now I am at a loss on what to try next. Please help.

With Win 7 you should be using Audacity 1.3.12 - check in Audacity "Help > About Audacity" to ensure that you have the correct version.
Audacity 1.3.12 can be downloaded from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/

You are not "Editing" the sound card drivers, you are "updating" the sound card drivers.
If the new/updated drivers cause problems then you can "roll back" the drivers to the previous version. Making a restore point before updating them is a belt-and-braces safety measure - should not be necessary but if in doubt then it will at least give you peace of mind that you can reverse the changes that you make.

I'm not sure exactly what you are doing - if after updating the sound card drivers you still have the same problem, could you describe this in more detail - step by step with details of what you set and where you set it.

Information on this page may also be useful: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel
and possibly here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Windows_7_OS

I'll move this post to the Audacity 1.3.x part of the forum (you posted in the 1.2.x part).
