distortion when recording high notes

Post by Bollie » Wed Aug 11, 2010 9:54 am

Windows 7 (Ultimate)
1.3.12 Beta (Unicode)
I'm transferring my lp's to cd. I'm presently using a Lenco (3866) USB turntable which has a built-in amp. I can also record via the line-in jack and have tried both.
I've read your tutorial and the info from Lenco on installing a USB turntable.
I began recording various records of boys' sopranos (choir). The problem is that when playing it back the high notes sound as if they are being sung by 'the Chipmunks' (just inhaled some helium) - yes - that dates me. ;) I've tried everything I can but can't seem to get rid of this distortion.
I had the same problem with a recording of a boys'choir + tenor soloist. By changing the pitch - down 20% (under effects) I was able to 'clean' that one up.
But with the other recordings I can't seem to get it right.
Any suggestions.

Is the turntable recording 20% fast or not? You can buy strobe turntable mats (or the platter rim may already have a strobe rim) to see if it is recording at 33 1/3 rpm.

Does the distortion you complain about cause the red hold light in the Audacity meters to come on? Can you upload a short MP3 file (30 seconds or so) that demonstrates the problem? You can use the "Upload attachment" tab to do that, underneath the message Post/Preview buttons.
