aup files from recycle bin

Post by diatoday » Wed Mar 26, 2008 10:10 pm

sooo, i thought i had exported a file I recorded from an LP to an mp3 file, but I guess I exported only part of the file. I must have had some of it selected or something. Anyway, I didn't notice that the mp3 file was way too short until after I deleted the aup file and the Audacity data folder. I went to the recycle bin, and restored the data folder. But the aup file, which is apparently the index of all the smaller track files, was nowhere in the recycle bin. Is there any way to restore the recording from the files in the data folder? (I recorded at my sister's house, halfway across the country, so cannot easily re-record the one side of the LP.) Thanks for any info.

No, not easily. As you allude to, the .aup is the critical file which tells Audacity how to thread together all the little .au files - without out you are a bit stuck - the forum is full of postings where Audacity has crashed mid-recording having created lots of .au files but without creating the .aup.

You're best bet will be to get hold of the album (in spite of the geographic constraints) - or can you get your sister to record that side of the LP with Audacity, export it to a WAV file - burn it to a CD and send that to you in the mail - you can then load that WAV into Audacity on your machine and start over.

I was afraid of that. Thanks for the "bad" news. I was kind of hoping there would be a hidden second recycle bin, but there doesn't seem to be.
Ah well...... Have a good day.

Before you give up - are you absolutely sure that you deleted the .aup file?

Have you used a CTRL-F search in Windows Explorer across your whole C: drive to try to find it?
