I have a win 7 PC. My wife records her line dance lessons (she's a student). She has me start the mp3 player recording when she leaves. (she's very non-tech).

I want to take her recorded WAV file into Audacity, cut off the beginning 15 or so minutes and then save the remaining to a WAV or MP3 file. I have been able to do this on occasion but never with much reliability. Usually, the options I want to use are greyed out.

It seems so simple but it is so elusive. How do I do it?

open a WAV file, select part of it, save it as a new file. That's all!

Drag-Select some of the work > File > Export Selected.

Audacity doesn't Save sound files.

I usually do this backwards. I Export the whole thing as a safety. Then carefully Drag-delete the bits I don't want. Then straight Export. I use the Zoom tools to make sure I got everything selected accurately. Control-E zoom into selection, Control-F zoom out full, and Control-3 zoom out a little bit.

Hit Space on the keyboard or the Stop button to ungrey all the relevant menu items. Then hit HOME or click |<< , select to 15 minutes and delete. Then File > Export Selection...
