Try this
Frequently Asked Question. If it doesn't help, give us more to go on like the version of Windows you are using, what input you are trying to record from and how the headphones are connected to the computer.

I have Windows 7 and I can't hear the sound thru my headphones in record mode. I can hear it during playback but when I try to record I hear nothing. I went thru all of the steps in FAQ section and made sure my sound drivers were all updated and anything else I could think of but still no sound...help.

It's good that you tried, and great that you bothered to read the FAQ (if only everyone did that

)
but we still need more information.
Which exact version of Audacity (look in "Help > About Audacity", It will say Audacity 1.3.?? We need those last digits)
What are you recording from?
What settings do you have in the
Device Toolbar?
Any other information that you think may be relevant.

I am using Audacity 1.3, I am recording from a microphone plugged in via usb port. I have imported audio that is on my computer and am trying to record to that but cannot hear it. I have headphones plugged in to the front of my computer and can hear fine thru them on everything except in record mode. The settings are: MME, Speakers(high def), Microphone(2-C media), (Mono) input. I have recorded several songs on this computer in the past. I just recently upgraded it from Vista to Windows 7. I did a clean install and had to re-install all programs myself including Audacity, I just installed it last nite and have not been able to get it to work.

Your USB microphone is a separate "device" from the standard computer sound card, so there is no direct (wired) route from one to the other. This means that the only way to route the sound from the microphone through to the headphone socket is for software to pass the audio signal from one to the other. Sadly, software is a lot slower than a direct "wired" connection, so there will be an annoying delay between the sound going into the microphone and back out to your headphones. However, if you wish to try this, the easiest method is to enable "Software Playthrough" (near the bottom of the "Transport" menu. You will probably find that recording is easier without hearing your voice through your headphones.

I can't hear the "music" playing thru the headphones to sing with it. I can hear it when I do just playback but when I hit record to sing with it I can't hear anything. It's hard to sing with something I can't listen to. As I said before I have recorded this way numeous times using the same computer and headphones and mic that I have now.

Can you hear the music if you just "Play" in Audacity?
If so, then all you need to do is to enable "Overdub" (near the bottom of the Transport menu).
