So the SnakeLight cord wouldn't work... so I am now trying to simply
record from the sound card and I get an error:
Error while opening the sound device, Please check input device.
Isn't there a selection to record online radio and other things coming
through the sound card? I used to do this with Audacity years ago and
now I cannot figure it out!
Running Windows 7 with all the latest updates and the beta Audacity.
What good IS this program if nothing works??

See
http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 16&t=37128 - it works but you are expecting it to hardware monitor when it is never intended to support that.

The thing that "doesn't work" is Windows 7 because it disables all or most of the inputs until you enable them in Sound in the Windows Control Panel, and can get tangled if the default sample rate Windows uses doesn't match with the rate in Audacity or whatever your recording program is.
Please read the Wiki starting
here and then down past the picture of the Sound control panel applet to read the eight magic steps. Also on the Playback tab, right-click the speakers or headphones > Properties then the Levels tab. You can try unmuting the line-in or mic there so you can hear what you are recording.
