Im trying to export anything at all, be it noise generated to this really cool guitar piece I just recorded... and all I get is blips of static in the beginning and end and then no sound. Any ideas?

Have you managed to record something successfully?
and does it play correctly in Audacity?
If so, exactly what are you doing to export it?
It may also be useful to know exactly which version of Windows and which version of Audacity you are using - the Audacity version is shown in the Audacity "Help menu > About Audacity".

Ive recorded it successfully and it plays back in audacity exactly how its supposed to sound. I have managed to export it to wma with sound recorder but... thats not right! It ends up half as loud. Anything exported makes that weird popping noise in the beginning and end. 1.3.12-beta.

Is it because my format was 32 bit float? Should I knock it back to 16 bit?
I tried this and the noise doesnt even play right in audacity.

Open your Audacity Project and check that it is playing correctly.
Assuming that it's OK,
Set the Project Rate to 44100 (bottom right corner of the main Audacity window),
then Export as "WAV (Microsoft) signed 16 bit PCM".
