Bug Using "Compress Dynamics"

Post by orgelquaeler » Sun Jul 18, 2010 1:34 pm

I know there are multitudes of bugs concerning this compressor, as awesome as it is. This one occurred in 1.3.12, while working on a long (1hr 45m) file, single track, a .aup project file, that had a blank space in the middle (i.e. limbo space between two joined tracks). Only the audio up to the split was compressed, the rest was eliminated (completely deleted from the track). I tried three times to get it to work correctly, but it did the same thing all three times. I had to export the file as a .WAV, and then applied the filter to the WAV, which seemed to work just fine.

I know this isn't a huge problem, but one you might want to keep in mind.

Again: Windows XP Pro, Audacity 1.3.12, Dual Core AMD, 4GB RAM

It has been a week since this happened and I just regained internet access, so this is the best I can do as far as details go.

Good work on 1.3.12. I haven't had any issues with it except for the above mentioned. Keep up the good work!

"Compress Dynamics" is a third party plug-in and while we are happy to help where we can, bug issues should be addressed to the plug-in author.
I'm aware of a problem with the Compress Dynamics plug-in that sounds very much like what you are describing, but I believe that Chris (the author) fixed the bug, so check that you are using the latest version of the plug-in. http://pdf23ds.net/software/dynamic-compressor/

Chris has been good about that. His compressor uses serious look-ahead management and it has to be very carefully designed to avoid "nothing." An early version of his compressor would freak when it got to the end of a song, in effect, stepping off the end of the known world. The work-around was always put Something out there for the tool to chew on and then cut off anything extra later.

That got fixed.

How did you create the limbo space? Time shift a portion of the show?

I copied and pasted a track onto the first track, a little past where the first track ended. It isn't a huge problem, and I know it's a third party plugin, but I appreciate the heads up. I will make sure I have the latest version of it.

Thanks!
