What are all the options in "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices", and which options have you tried?
What Operating System are you using?

No worries, but yes it is important, Vista and Win 7 can be a pain and take some "jiggling" to get things working correctly.
On Vista (and Win 7) it can be necessary to get everything set up with exactly the same settings throughout the system to get things to work. Probably the most standard format is "16 bit, 44100 Hz stereo (CD quality)". Try going into the "sounds" section of the Windows Control Panel and set the recording format for the Maya to "16 bit, 44100 Hz stereo (CD quality)", then check that Audacity is set up the same ("Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and "Edit menu > Preferences > Quality").
Here's how you set the Windows Control Panel settings: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel

its because Audacity is not getting a signal, or the signal is so small that it is not registering.
The good side is that it indicates that Audacity is working.
The bad side is that it indicates that the computer sound system is still not configured correctly.

Check in the Control Panel http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... _Issues#cp
and in Audacity Preferences:
"Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and
"Edit menu > Preferences > Quality"

that you have the same device and the same default recording quality (sample rate and bit depth) set the same throughout the system.
Try setting the sample rate to 44100 Hz and if that does not work, try 48000 Hz.
