track recording problem

hey guys =]

lets say i mic up my drumset. i record, then when i plug my bass into the microphone jack and start to record, not only does it pick up the bass, but iut picks up my drum track and layers it onto the 2nd track. the only way that this doesnt happen is if i have the track muted, but i cant hear what im playing to.

help?
