Okay, apparently, I'm not the only one with this issue, but this is what has happened:

I'm trying to record audio from my PC speakers, but the input only has the "master" option, no "line in" the way that my older version of Windows reads. At first, I noticed that it was picking up external audio, like when I would tap on keys and when I would say "testing" or something like that. So I tried using a 1/8" dual male cord to connect the microphone port to the earphone port. It seemed to work fine, but only for a second or two, then it would go completely silent and not pick up anything else.

I'm on a HP G60-235DX Notebook PC, so I don't have any RealTec Audio Devices to manually reset. In fact, there only seems to be one microphone installed in the computer (the Conexant High Definition Smart Audio 221). I've tried resetting my audio devices, I've tried re-downloading Audacity and I've tried updating the devices. Nothing is working to record audio from my PC to audacity. Someone please help me as a lot of my projects are going unfinished because of this!

And may stay that way for a while. The sound was vanishing because first, there is a terrific mismatch between the Stereo-Out of the headphone port and the Mono-In of the microphone connection. The natural loudness levels are wildly different, too.

Then, newer Windows machines have voice processing and echo cancellation so you can use your voice for Skype and other communications. This generally kills straight recording of a show or music.

Are you on a Windows 7 machine? You didn't say.
