Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Microphone will not be recognised! Help?

Post by Frithsamur » Wed Jul 07, 2010 3:28 pm

Hi there. I'm a new user to Audacity, and I've got to grips with manipulating existing files, and I now want to record my own. However-

I have a Samson Q1U USB microphone, however what-ever I do, Audacity pops up with the message, "Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sampler rate."

I've been all though the wiki, and the rate (bottom left number in Audacity, right?) is exactly the same. The microphone is enabled- it shows as working if I talk into it on the control panel, and it records in, "Windows Movie maker." What's going wrong? (I'm in Vista.)

Thank you so much, sorry if this is a typical newbie question.

Connect the mic before launching Audacity.

Make sure that the Audacity project rate bottom left is set at the rate the mic supports (48000 Hz), select the mic as the recording device in the "Devices" section of Audacity Preferences and set Recording Channels to mono (I assume this is a mono mic). Set the Host to "Windows DirectSound". Then set the Default Format to 1 channel 48000 Hz in the Windows system mixer (step 7 here).

If you have installed the Samson SoftPre applet, consider uninstalling it. It's widely reported to have issues on Vista.

Okay, this is the only part I'm having trouble with. How do you set the "Host?" is it on Audacity itself or in the computer's control panel? And also I can't figure out how to set it to Mono, and I'm afraid I have no idea if it's a mono microphone.

The rest I've done, and the error message still shows.

Assuming you are using Audacity 1.3.12, click Edit > Preferences then "Devices" top left. "Host" is the top box, "Recording Channels" the bottom box. You can choose "1 (mono)" there.
