Using Skype headset
Program - Audacity v1.3 Beta

Problem - Capturing sound using Headphone speakers. (NOT the microphone).

This program Audacity is pissing me off..I try selecting a device> and there is no device under recording to allow me to select my headphone speakers as the capture sound device.

I can select Headphones speakers under Playback but I cannot reverse it. Any ideas!

For all you lazy people who just read the first post here is what I posted on page two about my problem.
Look this is the wife, I have done this before.

The last time it worked there was a drop down window and I selected the Dule Mix option, it was in the main window but its not there anymore.
The last song I recorded was fake it by seether and I did it with my headset on and with out it picking sounds up from the mic. I got so frustrated when I tried to set up Audacity the first time to do this I deleted the drivers to the microphone thats built in the computer and it fixed the problem.

I want to say my problem is I can not see if my Line in is muted because the piece of trash that is windows 7 wont give me a master volume like xp does it just gives me a mixer. Its not impossible to do because I HAVE done it before.

I will edit this after I read the other posts ._. but this is what I know to have done when I had it working right, my husband made a second user on the computer and it stoped working the right way.

Its a headset, it has nothing to do with skype I dont know where my husband got the skype part from, I think its because its compatible with skype, Skype has nothing to do with this its all with Audacity. I will even take a screen shot to show you what I am talking about.
Edit Edit: Okay it seems my husband added something to Audacity which I have no clue but now the bar I am talking about is gone ._.

Anyways, what it should do is record from Stereo Mix regardless of my headset, which the headset + mic is only in so when hes recording crap from youtube at 1am I dont here it. SO Why is the stereo mix NOT working for recording sounds off the web. I dont have any interest in Total Recorder I use to use it but its BS now I like Audacity WAY better.

I want to do "What U Hear" recording to make it simple for those who STILL do not understand.

Sure. You're trying to record sound playing on the computer. There's a better than even chance that Windows 7 is not going to allow you to do that, but it's worth a shot.

I think it's still possible to get money-based software to help. Total Recorder and I think there's one more.

Yeah the link didnt supply me exactly what I needed to do. Under my recording area for the Control panel under windows 7 I have>

Microphone (Active and does work)
External Microphone (I am guessing this is the built in microphone to the laptop)
Integrated Microphone (This one is built in to the computer)
Stereo Mix (I have select this as a dafault device but does nothing) no sound.

I have right click a blank area of recording tab window and selected all unhidden items, I get nothing new.

My wife said she was able to record using the headset before (Using headset speakers to capture sound).

^^ My guess is she must of downloaded something that cracked the audacity file or found a program that made so that audacity record sound using headset? I have no clue. I spent 3-4 hours researching for an answer, I yet came up with nothing.

ADVICE to the creators of this program, put in a REVERSE option on playback and recording. Something like where you could change out devices to allow speakers to be the recording device, I don't care if you have to hack windows 7 to make the program do it.

We do care. Audacity runs on multiple versions of all three major operating systems and there just are not that many developers to go around. Are you volunteering to hack Win7 for us? No? Then that's the end of that.

Audacity is a complete slave to the operating system. If the OS doesn't supply a particular service to Audacity then Audacity doesn't get that service.

Are you on a Windows Laptop? They have their own challenges...

Read the posts again - Videz wants to record from Stereo Mix. ie. the sound coming out of his speakers.

Make sure that Skype is not running - not even in the background. Skype takes over the recording settings of the computer and prevent Audacity from accessing any input except for the microphone.

In other words, capture the music I hear on my headphones -- also known as Mix-Out.

Sometimes you have to translate what the poster wrote into what they really want. It's still possible we're all totally missing the boat, but I don't think so. The post has most of the Magic Words in it to qualify for a common complaint: How do I capture internet audio under Win7.

Complicated, of course, by our friend Skype.

What is the other Windows software package that can do this past Total Recorder?

There is one other possibility here. The poster could be trying to record both sides of a Skype call. Pamela Professional and Business can do that (not the other two) and I think Total Recorder can do that as well.

OKAY! New update, it seems its the USB HOWEVER, I have always been able to use my USB + Headset but something has happened, so it seems it might be the stereo mix not audacity. So for some reason when I switch out of my LineJack USB converter to the Line Jack plugs it works my Stereo mix picks it up but when I go back to using my USB enhancement it nolonger works ._. I would love to use my USB converter because then my mic doesnt sound trash as if it was just plugged in directly.

Could that "drop-down window" be the "Device Toolbar"?


If that's what you mean, to enable it, click "View > Toolbars > Device Toolbar".
If not that, then perhaps you mean one of the other toolbars? (enabled/disabled in the same menu).

Regarding the arguing, I can only agree that several of the posts were not in slightest bit helpful though in fairness it would have been very difficult for any forum user to identify the cause of the problem as there had been no mention of the "LineJack USB converter".
