Cannot hear anything when previewing an effect

Cannot hear anything when previewing an effect

HI,
I have just recently downloaded Audacity 1.3.8 and when I go to preview an effect, all I get is a very low fainted humm. BTW, this happens to 2 effects I have tried: DeNoiser and BassBoost. My specs are as follows...

Windows XP sp3
CPU Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz processor
RAM: 512MB DDR

I do not know my sound card, though it is an integrated sound chip

Is this a bug or do I have a setting turned off?

You have an old version of Audacity. The current version is 1.3.12 which you can get from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows
