I have Windows 7
I followed the tutorial and when I get to the point where it says to click on "Start Monitoring" there is no sound going in - nothing happens. I've checked my settings over and over again.
I'd appreciate some help.
Thanks.

Most of what is on that link, I already did. Here's the list of what I did again while I was going through those instructions.
Microphone is enabled
Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices are both checked
There is no option to Set as Default Device.
The only options are:
Configure Speech Recognition
Disable
Show Disabled Devices
Show Disconnected Devices
On the Levels tab in Properties,
Microphone is at 25%. I moved it up to 100%
Microphone Boost is 0.0 dB - I moved it all the way up to 30.0 dB
Moving the Microphone to 100% and Microphone Boost to 30.0 dB did not change anything.
Everything else checked out with the rest of the instructions in that section.
I know people say audacity can be set up to work with Windows 7. What am I missing?
Thanks for your help.

Actually, I did get it to record. Thanks.
Now I'm having a different problem ...
Everything I say is being run together and speeded up.
How do I adjust the settings so the recording sounds like what I'm saying?
thanks

How did you do that?
What sort of microphone are you using?

I think what did the trick was in Audacity Preferences - Devices, I changed my recording device to microphone; I kept my playback device on speakers.
I'm using a headset with mic from Radioshack.
Now, I still haven't figured out how to get it to sound like I say it. It still comes out speeded up. And the more directions I read and the more I play with it, the worse it gets. Any help with this one will certainly be appreciated.

See here:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel
and pay particular attention to steps 7 and 8
7. To prevent possible sample rate or recording channel discrepancies, right-click again and click Properties then the Advanced tab, and make sure the "Default format" matches both with the project rate bottom left of the Audacity screen, and with the number of "recording channels" in the Audio I/O tab of Audacity Preferences (Devices tab in current Audacity Beta); now click "OK"
8. Click the Playback tab of Sound, right-click over the "Speakers" or "Headphones" device for your computer sound device and set it as "Default Device" or "Default Communication Device" as required; then right-click and click Properties then the Advanced tab, and set "Default Format" to match with the settings in Step 7 above
