I have been searching and found information about splitting a file after recording. But does this program automatically split WHILE recording? One example would be while recording a live band during a 45 minute set which can be a really big file. It would make sense to set a file size limit in order to keep from taxing the pc. Any ideas?

Audacity is not a surveillance recorder and it does very few tricks in real time. You can do Voice Activated Recording and I can't think of anything else except manually placing labels.

Ive recorded audio tapes and LP's that go for over 45mins, everything went OK.
Probably after 1hr most computers will run out a ram and crash.

Actually i think you will run into more problems by automatically splitting a file, i do recordings of spoken voice (about 5 second sentences), and i end up with about 50x 5 second pieces of audio in the one audacity project, all together its only a few mins / 50-100MB, but it tanks my pc BAD!
So i think lots of small audio files is worse than 1 big file.

Not necessarily. It depends on what you are doing with the audio files. If you have lots of audio clips on lots of tracks, then that will be tough going because Audacity has to allow for data in every track, even if the track is silent. On the other hand, lots of audio clips in the same audio track should play almost as easily as a single file.

Provided that the computer has plenty of free, unfragmented disk space on a local internal hard drive it should be able to record a 45 minute session at 32 bit 44.1/48 kHz without it being taxing.
