Hey guys,

recorded something on Audacity earlier and then saved and exported it. For some reason, the export had no sound so I decided to re-open the raw file in Audacity and export it again.

However, when I checked the data, it was in like a hundred parts, about 6 seconds long each (screenshot at the bottom). When I right click -> open with Audacity it just opens that 5 second long audio and if I highlight them all and drag them into Audacity it doesn't magically arrange them all, but puts them all on a separate layer (or whatever it's called in Audacity ).

So my question is how can I open these small files in Audacity, short of manually placing every single one in order..

I'm pretty sure this is a really dumb question - but I checked the 'read here before posting' board and then did a search and came up with nothing. Probably because no-one has been stupid enough to need help with this before

Open the .aup project file that you saved as per this Frequently Asked Question. You can find the .aup file easily at File > Recent Files in Audacity.

If you recorded with a USB turntable or microphone, the most likely reason you can't hear the exported file in Windows Media Player or other programs is that you need to reset system sound to the inbuilt sound device (or unplug the USB device from the computer).

The .aup project file is itself only 6 seconds long though.

An individual .au file is six seconds long. According to your image the file you want to open should be "milcom Emile.aup" in the "Temporary Vids" folder. If you cannot see "milcom Emile.aup" in File > Recent Files in Audacity, open the "Temporary Vids" folder in that file manager program in the image then double-click "milcom Emile.aup" to open it in Audacity.

I know, I know, but the .aup named Milcom Emile.aup is only 6 seconds long. It's also only 18kb big. I assume something has gone wrong with it which I'll either need to fix or re-record.

The .aup is small - it is just a text file. Have you been editing it? You have already showed us all the .au files in the _data folder. Why doesn't the .aup file open the .au files in the _data folder when you double-click the .aup file?

If you are still concerned, please upload the Milcom Emile.aup file (not any of the .au files) so we can look at it. Click "Upload attachment" underneath the Preview/Post Message buttons.

And are you sure do not have a USB turntable and that is why you can't hear the exported file?

+1. Users often have problems and we make a lot of suggestions to try and help, and then they say "it's solved" with no further explanation. It really does help us and others to know what the cause of the problem was. There's no shame to admitting to "user error" if needs be.
