Scratchy Sound

I'm running Audacity 1.3.12 in Vista.
When I record something, then play it back, the sound is very scratchy.
What could cause this.
The meter levels are within normal range.

You can attach a short sample of the scratchy sound to your post, wav or mp3 format , which could help someone identify it.

What is it that you are recording, and how are you recording it?
