Audacity won't work on my Vista OS

I have installed Audacity 1.2.6 three times on my laptop with Vista OS, and uninstalled it because it won't open. Each time I try to open it I get the message "audacity.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly." No other programs were operating on the machine unless hidden as the last time I totally shut down the laptop and started it again before installing the program and trying to open it. Any ideas?
