Playback through windows media player

First off I have no control over the record or playback Volume.
Second it only gives me three options for play back and recording
they are Realtek AC97 Audio, USB audio Codec and Microsoft Sound Mapper -(input and output)
I have to set input to Realtek AC97 Audio and the output to USB Audio Codec. I get playback ( real load with no
control). Shouldn't it be USB Codec for both input and output?
Third when I make a file and export a song to it I am unable to playback and have any volume in Windows media player. It
shows the screen that it is playing but with no sound at all.

I am working with Windows XP Home Edition.

What USB device do you have are what are you trying to record? If you are recording a USB turntable or cassette deck, then at Edit > Preferences: Devices in Audacity, set the input to USB Audio Codec and the output to Realtek. If you want to listen to Windows Media Player, either disconnect the turntable or reset the system playback device to Realtek.

Current Beta versions of Audacity have a known bug on Windows XP that if a USB Audio Device is connected, the Audacity input / output sliders may not work for either the USB or motherboard sound device (i.e. Realtek in your case). If that is true, adjust the volume in the system mixer instead.

I'm using a usb record player from Innovative Technologies. Your information has solved a lot of problems for me, Thank you very much. The sliders are a little baffeling but livable.
