Can't hear what I'm recording

Okay, here's my problem in a nutshell...

I do alot of recording through my sound card of streaming audio (and even some video). Have never had a problem with that. Now I want to record from my stereo or tape player. I've got a line running from the headphone jack to the "mike in" jack on the back of my computer. When I go to record, the recording "shows up" but I can't hear what is being recorded. I can only hear it when I play it back. It wouldn't normally be a problem, but I also want to be able to record some stuff from my scanner radio, and would like to be able to still monitor while recording.

I'm using Vista, so I don't know if that makes any difference or not.

Any information / tips / comments / suggestions anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Never mind, I think I got it figured out. Lord knows it took me long enough LOL.

After about at least a hundred different combinations of settings (and about 3 hours of time wasted), I finally hit upon the right combination of settings.

I promptly wrote them down in the event I'd forget. Don't want to ever have to go through that again.

Now I just hope I can get the settings "reset" when I want to go back to recording streaming audio  :D
