USB turntable

I'm new to this forum and don't know if this question has been covered.
I plugged in my USB turntable into my HP laptop running Vista and turned it on. The software downloaded fine but when I put a record on the turntable the stylus doesn't stay on the record, it just slides across the record. I've tried everything even doing the old weight trick with pennies, nickels and quarters and that didn't work. Any suggestions besides returning the turntable?

Thanks,
dee

Some turntables had an Arm Lift lever or control. The turntable would life its arm and stop the platter at the end of the record.

If the arm is clearly hitting the record and it still skates across, then there is no needle at the end of the cartridge.

See here...

On the red cartridge, see that tiny short piece on the bottom? If you look at the end of that through a magnifying glass, there should be a really tiny sharp "needle" sticking down and that's what actually touches the record. I bet yours is missing.

Here, you can just barely see it sticking down on this view.

Did you save your receipts?

Just an off-the-wall thought - you haven't by any chance left the plastic protective cover on the cartridge that many manufacturers fit to protect the stylus during shipment?
