My operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium. I downloaded the Audacity 1.3.12 (Beta) for Windows from the Audacity web site, which installed properly. I purchased a Grace Didital Audio "Tape2USB" device for transfering music from cassette tapes to my computer. I followed all the set-up instructions and proceded to transfer a tape. I saved it as a ".wav" file on my computer. When I tried to play it with Windows Media Player, all I have is a cycodelic (sp) wave pattern on my monitor, and no sound. I tried to burn a test CD, and when trying to play it back on my computer, i got the same thing. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, and I have many good tapes that I want to convert to CD's.

how did you save it ?
what does the tape2usb manual say to do ?

i suspect you have some options set wrong
can you play it with their software
or play it with WMP ?

do you have their latest driver?
how does audacity get involved with this?
doesnt their software record and save the file?

did you try to edit it and then save again with audacity?
probably have some options set wrong?

we really need details on what you are doing and how it is all connected.

When you plug in a USB device like this your computer hands over control of all sound services to the USB device - both input and output. Since your USB TT doesn't have a set of speakers, you then don't get any sound from the computer (not even the normal computer sounds).

All you need to do is to get your O/S and Audacity to retarget the sound output onto your computer's on-board soundcard. In Windows use Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound Playback (I don't know the MAC equivalent) - in Audacity use Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O > Playback Device - you may need to close and restart Audacity for the change to take effect.

Since you are seeing the blue waveforms this implies that Audacity is receiving an audio signal from the TT.

When you plug in a USB audio device, Windows will usually set it as the default input (recording) and output (playback) device for all audio.

If you read carefully whomper, the OP stated that he/she gets the psychedelic pattern (I'm assuming that's wave-forms) in Audacity but no sound <<<all I have is a cycodelic (sp) wave pattern on my monitor, and no sound>>>.

I'm trying to deal with the first problem first, before moving on to the second part. The poster really needs to hear and review what they are recording and editing before they get around to exporting WAVs and burning CDs. Baby steps are good sometimes
