Sample rate mismatch on Audacity vs soundcard

Post by mr-b » Thu May 06, 2010 2:07 pm

Hi

If I set the Sample Rate in Audacity do I still need to set it on my soundcard?

I'm using Audacity 1.3.12 on Win7/64 with an M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496 soundcard. The latter has a control panel applet which indicates the input & output sample rate limit.
After I'd done some recordings in Audacity @96K, I noticed that the soundcard applet was set to 44.1K. The recordings are at 96k and there were no errors reported.
So does Audacity set (override) the soundcard rate? Or would it have been recording @ 96k but effectively limited to 44.1k as set on the soundcard?

I asked on the M-Audio forums and a reply said that some DAW s/w reports sample rate mismatch errors if the above happens, but they didn't know about Audacity.

I have a Shure Brothers external sound card that follows me at different sample rates, so I think Audacity puts the information out there and if the device responds to it, you win.
