Audacity & Edirol UA 25 & XP, No Recording

I've been using audacity on an XP laptop with an Edirol UA 15 for voice recording for a couple years.

A couple days ago my ability to record consistently via audacity has stopped.
I have removed audacity and downloaded and reinstalled.
I have uninstalled the Edirol Drivers and have downloaded and installed new drivers.

When I check audio devices through Windows Control Panel the pc recognizes the Edirol ua 25 and I can record and play back through MS Sound recorder.

I can open a wav or mp3 file in Audacity and play it fine.

The issue is I can not record.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. It may be something obvious I am missing.

Regards,

AL

which type driver are you using?
if its the asio i do not think audacity will work without your compiling a special version

did any autoupdates occur
microslop loves to reset options and settings
check the system control panel and the driver control panel and be sure they all match up

That's great - it rules out a lot of possibilities. If it works in MS Sound recorder then it should also work in Audacity, which suggests that it is just an Audacity setting that is wrong.

The Edirol must be connected and the USB indicator light on before you open Audacity.

You've not said exactly which version of Audacity you are using, but I'll assume it is some version of Audacity 1.3.x (the current version is 1.3.12).
After the computer is fully booted and the Edirol is in business, open Audacity.
Go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and check that the recording device is set to "USB".

Thanks Whomper and stevethefiddle.

I am using Audacity 1.2.6. I looked into the suggestions each of you made and decided I needed to uninstall the Edirol drivers and reinstall them from the original CD that came with the Edirol. I did this and was very carefull in the sequence of operations to start without the Edirol USB connected etc. Now it work fine. The only thing I can figure is that the driver bundle I downloaded has drivers for several versions of windows and perhaps the incorrect driver was installed.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Al

I doubt that would be the case because you said that it was working in MS Sound recorder. If there was a driver problem then it wouldn't work in MS Sound recorder.
However, you now have a working system and that's the most important thing so probably best to leave it alone for now. ;)

On Windows XP, MS sound recorder requires that the recording input is set as the default in the Windows Control Panel as it is preconfigured to use the Microsoft Sound Mapper. It is not necessary to configure the sound system that way to get Audacity to work, though doing so is often the easiest way to get Audacity working.

If MS Sound Recorder works, then it is possible to record from the same input source using Audacity. It usually works the other way round too but in a few rare cases Audacity can record from sources that MS Sound Recorder cannot. In most cases if you can get one to work, then the other will also work as long as you set it up correctly.

Doing things in the right order can often make all the difference between success and failure. For example with USB devices, the USB device must be fully connected and operational before Audacity is launched.
