People who know more about this than I would be better able to help you if you said what your operating system is, (e.g. Windows, Macintosh, Linux)
and how the microphone is connected to the computer, (e.g. is it via a USB connector, or a 3.5mm jackplug).

operatinf system is windows xp

i dont think it the mike thats the problem. the microphone works fine with skype. the drop down box in audacity next to the mike has no options does that mean software has not recognised the mike.

or have i just not pressed a button in audacity

Audacity is not compatible with Skype so it is important that Skype is completely shut down before you open Audacity (Skype must not be running even in the background).

No, it just means that the drop down box does not work with your sound card (this is not uncommon on Vista and occasionally happens on XP also). The instructions in Trebor's link should still work.
