stuttering background track when i record

Post by Tobias » Sat Apr 17, 2010 3:00 pm

I am using the beta version for windows and have vista home premium with 4gb of RAM. I have a simple background track I am trying to overdub on.
it plays fine. When i hit record however it starts to stutter or delay and i can't complete the overdub. When i look at the computer's resources it seems that RAM is not the issue but i notice that the
"disk" monitor fills up. Any thoughts- help!! going out of my mind.

Have you ever defragmented your drive?

Defrag
-- Right Click Start > Explore > Right Click Local Drive C: > Properties (Used, Remaining)
-- Tools > Error Checking & Defragmentation

Do the error check, too.

While you're in there, how much free space do you have on your hard drive and how big is it? Audio (and video) production needs large swaths of clean, error-free, defragmented drive space to work.

If you've never defragmented your drive, it may take a good long while. Vista doesn't give you the little drive map that the older WIndows did, so you have to just take it on faith that it's working.

Thanks Koz
The drive has plenty of room but I will try the defrag.

So what ultimately worked was the following. My latency was set to -190 based on directions I had followed to set latency in the manual.
I set the latency back to 0 and the problem went away. I set it back to -190 and its still works fine. Why? Beats me? Very frustrating.
The drive had already been defragmented 2 days before the problem started happening when i checked my defrag scheduler. So it wasn't that in this case.

Thanks for your help though- it got me thinking to try some other things.

If the "audio buffer" setting is set too low it can cause this problem. The default setting of 100 usually works fine.
