Volume mishap

Post by DreamCatcher409 » Mon Apr 12, 2010 7:11 pm

I'm having a volume problem, i record the sound coming from a song on youtube, and it sounds good (As good as the quality from youtube) but the problem is, is that a song by a band, ex: The Faded Line by Lamb of God, sounds louder than the song i converted into MP3 format and placed onto my MP3 player. How to thoroughly explain this is kind of awkward...when you listen to music on your MP3 player, you don't have to alter the volume settings for each song, they all play at a good level, but the song i converted into MP3 format seems fainter, not as loud as every other song. Any ideas on what i need to do?

Thanks

Patrick

use amplify on the entire recording before you export the file.
if still not loud enough you may need to compress it. but compressing a utube file may not sound very good.

And when i use the amplify effect, is it set up to the default volume of songs that are generally heard on MP3 players?

In Audacity 1.3, the default Amplify level brings the loudest peak up to 0dB. Without using dynamic compression, that's as loud as it will go without distorting.

I meant to delete my previous post, i found out (Thanks to whomper) that the amplify effect does make the volume equal to that of other songs on my MP3 player.

Much appreciated

i have no idea what teh default is. i doubt there is any standard. most folks these days seem to make everything as loud as possible.
you get to pick how much amplification. you can only go to the max without clipping. you can use less or even lower the level if that is what you need.

how you hear from the mp3 player depends on how far you turn the volume knob.

you need to export the recording with a few different amplify amounts and see which one you like eg 0db -6db -12db etc.
it does not matter what the original was at, you set how high it will be after amplify for when you export it to mp3.
when you find the one you like always use the amount that gives that level that you like.
