The AUP project manager file (it's not a sound file) and the _DATA folder need to be in the same place. If you have one in one folder and the other somewhere else, the show is never going to open.

It's scary that this is happening because the next thing you're going to complain about is pieces of your show are missing. That happens, too, when you start moving files around.

well ... actually if you go into the aup folder and edit the location of the data folder it works fine.

I presume you mean - edit the .aup file.
Doing that can be risky. All but the most simple projects have multiple directory references and you must get every one exactly correct or the project will be broken. The task may be complicated further if there are dependencies.

It is very much better to just get into the habit of not moving, deleting, renaming, or changing any files or folders that are involved in a project until you have finished with the project and exported the completed audio file.

good point
i moved all the files once. and got it to work by editing where i found the path in the aup folder (which i suppose was in the aup file )

now i have all the paths set to where i want them so no more monkeying around like this.

The problem is trying to explain that to somebody who only has a very shaky notion how their computer works. Much better and more simple: You can't move an Audacity Project and if you did, put it back.
