mine has 5 tabs - maybe your layout is different so look at all of it

you should only need the mixer tab (but check the otehrs to turn off unwanted "features" taht can cause problems -- and check the sound effects tab to flatten the eq - mine defaulted to something weird)

it records from everything that is not xed off in the bottom with red "x" through the speaker at the bottom
click the speaker icon at the bottom to toggle what you record from

playback is the same -- you can toggle on and off many outputs
dont forget to scroll left/right to find them all

click on the wrench to see how to see all the options to set
click on the left speaker to mute all at once

you may then need to make a final selection in audacity to get what you are trying to do to work

My mistake I have 4 tabs. Mine seem different. I am running VISTA. Are you running VISTA or XP? I have no wrench in the control panel?

i have xp. realtek has lots of versions. poke around the control panel and find everything and try it. most of them have a lot of similar items that are needed. dont know why they do the other things.
i would be surprised if you cant find some easter egg like places that will give you something more to see andor let you toggle things on/off.

the wrench was on the mixer tab. you should have one taht lets you adjust volume and toggle on/off in/outputs.

vista may be a problem by itself. dont know cant say.
if you cant find a realtek/audacity setting that works then
double check the system control panel for other sound stuff and check their settings too.

I think the problem is with VISTA. I had another recording program "super mp3 recorder" (not free) for my old XP machine which allowed me to do silent recording. The program does not seem to work properly on my VISTA machine. In XP I was able to open its volume control and control each device. On VISTA that does not work even thought the program is advertised to work on VISTA. Writing to the author has gotten no responce. So I thought I would try Audacity. So here I am.

Here is an interesting article (the mixer it refers in my case to has 4 items: speakers, Window sound, audacity,IE. Playing with these does not give me silent recording ):

i can believe that everything andor anythign does not work on vista.
i exercised my downgrade rights on my new pc to go back to xp.

now that said, do you have the latest realtek drivers?
if the author does not respond, i will infer that it is just another bogus claim that so many software vendors make.
