Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Chain import / export

Post by ppay » Wed Apr 07, 2010 12:55 pm

I installed Audacity beta on several machines.

What is the way to import/export Chains so that I can re-use a chain built on one PC on another PC?

There is no easy way to do this, but you can do it manually.

When you create or edit chains, it will create a "Chains" folder in
  • Windows 2000/XP: Documents and Settings<user name>Application DataAudacity
  • Windows Vista and 7: Users<user name>AppDataRoamingAudacity
You can copy that folder from one installation of Audacity to another provided that it is the same version of Audacity.

Thanks. Which makes me think that a portable version of Audacity beta would be nice, not using the Documents and Settings folder by default on XP, but a folder relative to the install path of Audacity portable.

Then you are in luck.

Download the ZIP version of Audacity 1.3 http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows
Extract the contents of the ZIP archive to your computer - this will produce a single folder with everything inside.
Open the folder and create a sub-folder and name it "Portable Settings"
(Optional) Create a Desktop link to the "audacity.exe" file.

Settings will now be saved in the "Portable Settings" folder.

Perfect! I wish that this information was more accessible. I could not find it in the 1st place. The word "portable" is not even there on the download page for the beta.

It is in the Audacity wiki http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... e_Audacity
but yes I take your point.

You will no doubt appreciate that documenting Audacity is in itself a huge project (volunteers welcome - see second paragraph here).

An improved "Search" facility would be a great help. Try searching for the word "Portable" on this page: http://audacity.easyspacepro.com/exchange/?page_id=105
Similar results come up if you search for "Portable" on this page http://audacityteam.org/ IF you select "Wiki/Forum/Team site"
