Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

A new sound card would certainly be an upgrade - the sound cards built into PC motherboards are rarely very good, but I'm intrigued to know why this doesn't work. If you have the time and energy to work this through we may find a solution that can help other users with the same problem.

Could you check on the ASUS web-site and see if updated drivers are available for XP on this board.

The initial problem that you had (requiring the audacity.cfg file to be reset) is almost certainly caused by the same issue.

I can give it about an hour now, its 23:15 here, need to work in the morning.

The drivers are up to date

FYI - I'm still getting the latency error when using the cm6501 drivers in Preferences->Devices.

The only way to get it working at all is using windows directsound.

No rush with this, come back to it tomorrow or whenever you have time.

I note there is a "Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/2003 HD Audio Patch KB888111" available on the web site.
Unfortunately there's no information about what this does, but it may be worth checking to see if it is installed.
The patch is in the "Utilities" section of this page: http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=J ... t=download (you need to select your OS first)

I'm also wondering if there is a setting in the Windows Control Panel to enable full duplex. This is a really weird audio chip - it handles audio over the USB bus. Have a look in the USB settings as well as the audio settings. Do you have any other USB devices attached?

What happens if you reset Audacity preferences, reboot the computer and run Audacity with all default settings?
Have you ever had Audacity 1.2 installed on this machine?

Hi Stephen,

I noticed that there was a BIOS upgrade available, so I installed that but the asus update utility failed half way through and screwed the mother board, while trying to fix this my OS got corrupted as well, its been a tough week PC wise.
After flashing the bios again, reinstalling windows, checking all hardware settings I could find for sound it still didn't work properly.
This morning I bought a cheap Sound Blaster card and now Audacity works like a dream.
I have a feeling it wasn't a setting but the sound circuit on the motherboard was faulty.

Anyway, problem is solved.

Thanks for your help.

That's entirely possible. Glad you have it working now. :)
