Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Playing in a Window

Post by michaelandjimi » Tue Jan 29, 2008 9:08 am

My Audacity worked fine for about 5 minutes. Now it still works fine, but it refuses to play in anything less than a maximised window, that is, when i click the maximise button (I have to right-click the little thing on the bottom when its minimised) it works. However, when I want it in a smaller window, (using the restore button in the top left) it doesn't appear at all.

It's generally easier to work in Audacity in full screen, but check that it's not got hidden behind the task bar or something silly like that.

This has now happened to me. I'm using Windows Home XP. Audacity's been fine for months, but will only show as a minimised button on the status bar or maximised; when I open the program, it is maximised.

I need to be able to resize the window, as I'm doing a voice recording from a text that's displayed on-screen.

I did try uninstalling and re-installing Audacity. It opened in the usual resizable way, but as soon as I opened a second Audacity window (to edit in a correction), the program dropped back to minimised buttons again.

I should say that when it's maximised, the resize button is displayed at top right but clicking on it causes the program window to minimise.

Any suggestions?

Peter

This problem is caused by invalid options in the Audacity configuration file (audacity.cfg)
The easiest way to fix it is to search for "audacity.cfg" and delete it - it will be recreated with the default values the next time you launch Audacity. Note that on Windows, audacity.cfg is a hidden file, so you need to include "hidden files" in the search.

I've noticed this problem happen a couple of times if I inadvertently click on the Audacity launch icon too many times and open multiple instances of Audacity. If you need multiple Audacity projects open at the same time you should open just one instance of Audacity, then use the File menu in Audacity to open new projects (rather than launching multiple instances from the desktop or start menu icons).

I'm having the same problem, and my computer (Windows Vista) can't seem to find audacity.cfg. Help please?

"audacity.cfg" is a hidden file. See here for how to make hidden files visible: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutoria ... al130.html

The default location for audacity.cfg is:

* Windows: Documents and Settings<user name>Application DataAudacity
* OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/audacity
* Linux: ~/.audacity-data

It seems that I can't access Documents and Settings after I followed the instructions.

I'm really sorry, if I'm annoying you.

You may need to be logged in with an administrator account - I don't really know about this as I don't use Vista.

Many thanks for this answer -- delete audacity.cfg file ---- to solve the problem that Audacity 1.3.x won't launch.
This worked perfectly.
