Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Closing Audacity with click on x

Post by Balanced » Fri Apr 02, 2010 4:49 pm

I used Audacity previously on WinXP now on Win7 x64 for some time now.

What has never changed is that I cannot close the program by clicking on the x in the upper right window corner (close button). The program seems to close but restarts immediately (this is so fast that I think it doesn't even close at all).

I didn''t find a bug report about that but I can't possibly be the only one who noticed that. So am i doing something wrong? Is there something apart from the regular installer that I have to install?

It's good to include the exact version of Audacity when you post something like this.

This was a hot potato for a while. Mac versions mean different things with the [X] than Windows. Windows closes the program, Macs shrink the program to the "to do" pile but still running.

Sorry, for not being specific enough.
I am using the version 1.3.12-beta Unicode on Windows 7 x64. I found the same issue with 1.3.11 on my Win7 system and on (all?) other 1.3.x versions on my old WinXP system.

Don't be such a pessimist Koz :D

Edit menu > Preferences > Interface tab.

Select (tick) the option "Closing last window quits Audacity".

LOL Indeed, that solved the problem which it seems wasn't a problem but a feature :D
Thanks for the tip!

Just to note, having that option checked (ticked) is default, so Balanced must have changed it. However checking "Closing last window quits Audacity" also means that File > Close will quit the application rather than simply close the current project. No other application I know of does that on Windows, and the current window close behaviour is a bug for Windows and Linux as far as I'm concerned:

This is correct, I changed that long ago because I thought that is similar to the behavior in other software.

There, multiple sessions don't come in windows but in tabs or several internal windows in the main window.
In those apps closing the last project (=internal window) normally just blanks the main window. Closing the main window closes the program.

There's a similar setting in Firefox, where closing the last tab closes the whole browser instead of just blanking the window. I guess I thought this and the Audacity setting meant the same and changed it for that reason.

Besides, I would also like it better if Audacity would behave more window-ish in this matter and combined all open projects in tabs or internal windows into one main window.

I'll note that as a "Feature Request". I'm surprised more people don't suggest that, but I think tabs in applications were not commonplace ten years ago when Audacity was first developed. Either way, system close methods must always quit the application when closing the last window, IMHO.

Thanks
