Need help connecting keyboard to pc
I have a Yamaha YPT-230 keyboard amd am currently connected to my pc via the midi in and out from the keyboard to a usb port on my pc. When I try to record in Audacity, i get no waves and the playback is silent. I'm wondering if I have thie set up wrong? Should I connect from the output from the keyboard to to the input on the soundcard? And if so, what type of cord would I use. Thank you for any help.
Re: Need help connecting keyboard to pc
MIDI is not audio.
To record sound (audio) you need to connect an audio output from the keyboard to the "Line Input" of your computer.
That could be a problem if the computer is a laptop PC as most laptop PCs only have a microphone input and not a "Line input". Full size PCs usually have both a microphone input and a Lini input - use the Line input.
What outputs do you have on the keyboard (other than USB)?

I have a phones/output port and i do have a line-in port on my PC. Do you know which type of cable I would need to connect the 2? Would it be a basic guitar cable that runs from the guitar to an amp?
Re: Need help connecting keyboard to pc
It needs to be a "shielded stereo audio cable".
The plugs need to suit the sockets that you are plugging into (obviously). Probably a stereo 1/4" jack at the keyboard end and a stereo mini-jack (1/8" stereo jack) for the computer. The problem with this is that you will then not be able to plug headphones into your keyboard, so you will probably also want a "headphone splitter cable". Headphone splitters are often short (10 cm) cables with one 1/4" stereo jack plug on one end and two 1/4" stereo jack sockets on the other.
Some shops charge ridiculously high prices for these cables but if you shop around you should be able to get them for just a few dollars.
Have a good look at the sockets before you buy and you'll have a good idea if the cables you are getting are the right ones. They are usually standard sizes and if they are the wrong size it should be obvious. Just make sure the plugs and cable are stereo.
