starting a new project
Hi. What is the best way to begin a new project? To start with "File>Save Project As..." before starting to record. Or to just set up Preferences,record,Edit, click Close, and Save Changes, when finished? I always seem to run into closing down problems when I start by clicking File>Save project as. I am using Audacity 1.3.11 Thanks, Roy windmill

Personally I prefer to open the new project and save it to it's destination filename (when I don't forget to, that is 
). I do this because it stops Audacity from using it's temporary file area and makes it store the project files in proper target locations.
But for many projects I don't use a stored Audacity project at all. For LP transciption for example I capture an LP side in Audacity and export a raw capture master WAV (at 32-bit floating) for backup - do all the processing in Audacity and then export a multiple set of WAVs (at 16-bit PCM) - close the project without saving ...

But for LP transcriptions I don't bother saving projects at all. I open Audacity, do the capture of one side - then I export a master capture WAV for backup - edit/clean the intrack gaps and label up the tracks and then do an Export Multiple to get a set of WAVs for making a CD and or loading into iTunes. Then I just discard the Audacity project - exit without saving and Audacity cleans up all the temp files it was using.
There is no such thing as "Save Multiple" BTW - you are getting confused = Audacity Projects are "Saved" - Exports produce usable, transportable music files like WAV and MP3 etc. (I can hear Koz murmuring: "told you so ..."
