that approach to gaps is what i want. slight amount after and very little before the new one in case someone picks that track number on the cd player it would be odd to have a long pause before playing. So
are you saying that if i have those gaps set up that the burner may still add another two seconds? my old nero had that gapless option but i did not understand why. now i see it. but newer roxio does not show that ability so i guess i get two seconds no matter what.

The s/w burners add that 2 second gap (unless you stop them) because two seconds between tracks is what the "Red Book" standard for CDs specifies.

Thanks for your help guys - slowly getting there. This is just an amazing system -so lucky to have come across it. Here's hoping for success sometime soon! Manage to copy the tape but just want to be able to skip tracks when I play the CD I have created if I don't feel like listening to that particular song.

that is easy. tag each track start using ctrlB. then export multiple.

I admire Ctrl+N's purist approach to preserving the original LP gap length

When I consider it, I think my attitude was formed from studying classical piano music. Here the length of pauses signals to the audience whether they are listening to movements within the same opus, or different opuses.

Nowadays the gaps on most CDs are too long. On the original albums most songs flow together until there is a need to prepare the audience for a dramatic change in tone. So from my perspective if the gap length changes (when remastering a CD from an LP) that is really altering the music itself. The gaps are part of the music. Just as a pause within a song is part of the song.

Nowadays, CDs are made with a more uniform pause between songs regardless of musical considerations. For instance a song with a long fade-out needs a much shorter gap than a song that ends abruptly. The fade-out already signals to the listener that the song is over as it fades out, whereas the audience needs a moment to collect itself and prepare for a new song after an abrupt ending. This is the sort of thing that is just not observed on CDs.

The composer Mahler stated that he wanted an "interval" in the concert after the first movement of his second symphony.
On Gilbert Kaplan's recording of Mahler's Symphony number 2, Kaplan insisted that the first movement should be on one CD and the rest of the symphony on a second CD so that the listener would have to change the CD after the first movement (unless they have a multi-CD player).

he should have started the score of the next part with a page full of rests there was a concerto some wiseguy did where the pianist played one note sat for about 20 minutes and then played some more. i heard that it actually got performed.
