Audacity 1.3.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Hi everyone i think that i have the same problem but let me give you details about my computer and the way the BSOD pops up ( and i think it is a bug because i know exactly how to produce it, according to what you guys said about a bug =P)
So here it is...
i use Windows 7 as OS and the version is the Home Premium Service Pack 1.
my Graphic card is an Intel core i5 2,53Ghz
System memory is 4G and the sound card is a Realtek High definition audio...i think. the computer is a sony and I got it 3 weeks ago, so its still new.
now here is how the BSOD pops up.
i have a line 6 POD HD500. it is an audio interface and it is also new. i got it a few days ago. I double checked the drivers cause after some "googling" i read that it can be the problem, i did the memory and hardware chec, no problem were reported in the scan results. I use the last version of audacity and yes i got it here http://audacityteam.org/download/
when i start recording guitar the BSOD pops up around 30 secs after i hit the Record button and for additional information i read that antiviruses are a big reproduction killers ( i use norton ) so i tried turning off all the antivirus functions and guess what it worked i was able to record for over 3 mins ( the BS did not pop up i stopped the recording ) but the bluescary think :D showed it self when i was turning on the antivirus functions one by one. ( i though this might help ).
so that is it i hope this helps me and curtay and the audacity team and thanks for replies.

To both of you - and I've said this many times - Audacity can not cause BSOD, only crashes in Audacity. Applications like Audacity just do not have direct access to the kernel.

Drivers, other kernel-level software and hardware problems are the cause of crashes. VST effect plug-ins can crash Audacity but are not likely to crash the computer.

If the BSOD happens accessing Audacity Preferences, it is most likely the sound device or its drivers that is the problem. If you launch Windows in Safe Mode, then Audacity shouldn't have access to the sound device. If opening Preferences doesn't crash in Safe Mode, that's your answer.

See http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... n+#p132798 for what do on Windows XP.

Exactly the same principles apply on Windows 7 except that you also have the Event Viewer you can look at, and in your case you already seem to have found the cause of the problem. Contact Norton.

Nobody's laughing about that. It's not unusual for us to recommend shutting down or suspending virus software during audio or video production. Disconnect your network or internet, of course.

If you select the most serious virus protection, it will stop and inspect Every Packet and Byte that goes through the system. This will bring live capture or playback to its knees and may extend effects rendering to your retirement.

You can't finish your show, but you're perfectly safe.

It's generally possible to avoid the worst Audacity/virus checker interactions by configuring the anti-virus not to scan the Audacity temporary folder where the recordings will be written (see Edit > Preferences: Directories for the location of the temporary folder) . That at least lets you keep the protection running.

Given in your case simply turning protections on causes BSOD, you may have more serious problems. Feel free to let us know what the resolution turns out to be.
